ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MAGNETOS USED ON JOHN DEERE TRACTORS

This information was provided by Craig Roy, Salina Kansas
in the memory of Joe Roy.

This listing of magnetos is not arranged in any particular order, although they do tend to be listed from the earliest introduction to the latest.

Dixie
model 246C spec. 136115
John Deere part # AD116R
used on D 30,400-35,308
Note: This magneto was very similar to the following listed one, with the
main differences being it had an exposed impulse assembly rather than
enclosed and the drive member was slotted rather than tanged. It required
a tanged drive float on the magneto end of the drive float. It has brass
enclosure covers that were painted olive drab (Army green). All impulse
assembly related parts were painted semi-gloss black. To the best of our
knowledge, the rest of the magneto was not painted. The timing protractor
that riveted to the breaker housing's protruding arms was painted John Deere
green. This item was manufactured by John Deere and installed at Waterloo,
once the magneto was received from the manufacture.

Dixie
model 246C spec. 136116
John Deere part # AD295R
application D 35,309-81,069
Note: This magneto was very similar to the above listed one, with the
main differences being it had an enclosed impulse assembly rather than
exposed and the drive member was tanged rather than slotted. It required
a drive float with slots on both ends. It has brass enclosed covers that
were painted olive drab (Army green). To the best of our knowledge, the
rest of the magneto was not painted. The timing protractor that riveted to
the breaker housing's protruding arms was painted John Deere green.
This item was manufactured by John Deere and installed at Waterloo,
once the magneto was received from the manufacture.

Splitdorf
model 246T spec. 136518
John Deere part # AD597R
application D 81,070-94,700 / 94,901-130,699
Note: This magneto had pot metal enclosure covers. The magneto
was painted olive drab (Army green). The timing protractor that riveted
to the breaker housing's protruding arms was painted John Deere green.
This item was manufactured by John Deere and installed at Waterloo,
once the magneto was received from the manufacture.

Edison Splitdorf
model CD spec. 0010
John Deere part # AD1400R
application
D 130,700-152,707 / 153,209-155,599 / 156,000-187,101
G 1,000-11,980
A 462,100-462,499 / 464,500-465,099 / 466,400-478,499
AO & AR 255,340-256,999
AO Streamline 1,524 up
Note: The exposed magnet was painted semi-gloss black. The
rest of the magneto was not painted.

Eisemann
model GV2Q
John Deere part # AD636R
application D 94,801-94,900
Note: We have never seen an actual example of one of these magnetos.
We have a picture of one in an Eisemann service manual. Although the
picture is in black & white, we will pretty confident the magneto would
have been painted semi-gloss black.

Fairbanks & Morse
model R2
John Deere part # AC199R
application D 94,701-94,800 * D X67,500-X67,598 (1928 D experimental tractors)
* Note: The 1928 D experimental tractors "possibly" used the AC432R magneto
listed below, which is the same make & model of magneto. Differences between
an AC432R magneto and a AC199R are currently not known. We feel the
differences would have been minor.
Note: This magneto had raised lettering on its' rear side that said John Deere
Tractor Company Waterloo, Iowa. There were no external markings that
mentioned Fairbanks & Morse. The magneto was made by Fairbanks & Morse
exclusively for John Deere. It was referred to as a model R2 in all Fairbanks &
Morse parts and service literature.
Note: The exposed magnet was painted semi-gloss black. The rest of the
magneto was not painted. Due to the external timing lever that attached
to the rear of the magneto with a cotter key not being shown in any of the
Fairbanks & Morse parts listing we have for one of these magnetos, there
is a good possibility this item was manufactured by John Deere and
installed on the magnetos once they were received from Fairbanks & Morse.
If that was in fact the case, the external timing lever may have been painted
John Deere green.

Fairbanks & Morse
model R2
John Deere part # AC432R
application
GP 200,111 up
GPO 15,000 up
GPWT 400,000-405,109
Note: This magneto had raised lettering on its' rear side that said John Deere
Tractor Company Waterloo, Iowa. There were no external markings that
mentioned Fairbanks & Morse. The magneto was made by Fairbanks & Morse
exclusively for John Deere. It was referred to as a model R2 in all Fairbanks &

If that was in fact the case, the external timing lever may have been painted
John Deere green.

BO & BR 325,601-328,099
A 424,025-462,099 / 462,500-464,499 / 465,100-466,399
AO & AR 251,486-255,339
Note: This magneto was not painted.

Edison Splitdorf
model RM2 spec. 03757
John Deere part # ATY2003
application
Model 62 tractor 621,000-621,078
Note: This was the same type of magneto as the following one that
is listed. When the Model 62 tractor evolved into the L "unstyled",
the part # got changed from ATY2003 to AL2227T.
Note: Other than portions of the name plates, which were painted
semi-gloss black, the rest of the magneto was not painted.

Edison Splitdorf
model RM2 spec. 03757
John Deere part # AL2227T
application L 621,079-624,999
Note: Part # AL2227T was a magneto assembly less a drive gear & impulse
drive lug assembly. The above listed tractors used an AL2228T drive gear &
impulse drive lug assembly which produced a 10 degrees lag angle.
L 625,000-639,999
LA 1,000-4,532
Note: Part # AL2227T was a magneto assembly less a drive gear & impulse
drive lug assembly. The above listed tractors used an AL2337T drive gear &
impulse drive lug assembly which produced a 20 degrees lag angle.
Note: Edison Splitdorf changed the spec.# from 03757 to 03761 during their
production of this magneto. We found no information listed in any Edison
Splitdorf publications as to why the spec. # changed. We also did not find
any information in any John Deere parts book that mentions this spec. #
change. Edison Splitdorf was very lax in dating various information. We did
find an Edison Splitdorf general magneto application chart that was stamped
with a receiving date of January 28th 1943 by the firm it was sent to that
mentions that spec. 03757 had been replaced by spec. 03761. We do feel
that the spec. # changed prior to 1943.
Note: Other than portions of the name plates, which were painted
semi-gloss black, the rest of the magneto was not painted.

Wico
model AP spec. 477B
John Deere part # AB757R
application
B 24,050-24,999 / 37,038-39,037 / 44,600-46,199 / 49,200-89,999
BO & BR 328,100-331,499
A 478,500-487,999
AO & AR 257,000-258,799
Note: Other than portions of the name plates and oiling instruction name plates,
the magneto was painted semi-gloss black.

Wico
model C spec. 909
John Deere part # AL2908T
application
L 640,000 up
LA 4,533 up
Note: Other than portions of the name plates, the magneto was painted semi-
gloss black.

Wico
model C spec. 477
John Deere part # AB2875R
application
D 152,708-153,208 / 155,600-155,999
Note: This magneto had an AB part # rather than an AD. The reason for that
is that this magneto was first introduced as a parts department replacement
for various tractors that used a "long" lug flange mounted type magneto, prior
to it being used as the magneto that above listed D tractors were shipped
equipped with.
Note: Other than portions of the name plates, the magneto was painted semi-
gloss black.

Wico
model C spec. 1042
John Deere part # AH653R
application
H 1,000 up
B 90,000-217,798
BO & BR 331,500 up
A 488,000-598,518
AO & AR 258,800-269,045
** G 11,981 - ?
** Note: We were not able to determine the ending G tractor sn. when the
change was made to the following listed magneto. Effective beginning
date of January 1st. of 1948, G tractors were shipped with the following
listed magneto.
Note: Other than portions of the name plates, the magneto was painted semi-
gloss black.

Wico
model X spec. 1042
John Deere part # AA3870R
application
B 217,799-268,819
A 598,519-659,289
AO & AR 269,046-275,396
*** G starting sn. ? / ending sn. 46,501
*** Note: A beginning G tractor sn. was not able to be determined.
An ending sn. of 46,501 was able to be determined. An effective
beginning date was able to be determined. The effective beginning
date when G tractors were shipped with an AA3870R magneto was
January 1st. Of 1948.
Note: B, A, AO, AR, and G tractors with higher sn.'s than those
listed above were shipped with battery ignition as standard equipment.
The AA3870R magneto was offered as an "option" for all of these models
of tractors when a tractor order was placed by a dealer.
Note: Other than background areas of the name plates, which were painted
red, the magneto was not painted.

Wico
model X spec. 477
John Deere part # AB3674R
application
D 187,102 up
Note: This magneto had an AB part # rather than an AD. The reason for that
is that this magneto was first introduced as a parts department replacement
for various tractors that used a "long" lug flange mounted type magneto, prior
to it being used as the magneto that above listed D tractors were shipped
equipped with. It was offered by the parts department for replacement
purposes for various tractors beginning November 24th 1947.
Note: Other than background areas of the name plates, which were painted
red, the magneto was not painted.

In preparing this information the following forms of literature were used for reference purposes. Original type tractor parts books, service bulletins, parts & service information for various makes of magnetos.

We were very fortunate to have the assistance of a person who's name was withheld at his request, who spent time doing research for this project during some his many visits to Moline, Illinois.

Many thanks go out to the following individuals for their assistance on this project.
